4th graders are learning about the geography of the USA. Each student has been assigned a state, which they will research through various resources including books, hypertext, and other mapping tools.
Most students are already familiar with Google’s famous Maps tool, and many have even explored the globe in the richer Google Earth app, but few had yet realized that they can use this software to create their own maps. Students began locating their states and started adding placemarks, user-created “points of interest”, which others can view and learn from when using Google Earth.
As we progress, they will further embelish their Google Earth files with more important placemarks, paths, polygon layers, image overlays, text and photos that can also be organized and recorded as virtual tours for later playback and sharing.
