The Coordinate Grid w/Scratch

3rd graders have to learn a new math concept for their Game Design studies with Scratch: the coordinate grid. Since game controls require students to have knowledge of the X & Y positions of their sprites, we had a lesson in the grid and did a group activity on the SmartBoard.

Then the 3rd graders did an exercise out of their Programmer’s Notebooks that let them experience using keyboard commands to control the movement of their sprites.

Things are really starting to click now that they can control their sprites motion, and students are now generating ideas about how to use Scratch for making video games.
