Ready, Set, Design!

I organized a Design Thinking activity for the 5th grade’s first iBlock group activity of the year. Based on the Ready, Set, Design workshop from The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, students were challenged to create a prototype design to solve a problem given to them on a challenge card. This rapid prototyping task is a great ice breaker for the new school year and also a great way for students to practice their “blue sky” thinking when trying to solve a problem. The prototypes were pretty spectacular: students invented smart trash cans with sensors that alert City Sanitation to come empty them only when they are full, a water purification system built into a drinking straw, a portable shelter for homeless people, interactive glasses, an reflectors to help forest animals from being hit by cars.
